Darren Skolnik

I love the feeling of challenging myself. Climbing is a great opportunity to put hard work and determination to the test.

1. When do you start climbing?

I started climbing when I was 3 years old. I climbed on everything (including out of my crib). My parents took me to a climbing gym and I’ve been hooked ever since!

2. What do you do when you are not climbing? (Other hobbies/ sports)

I’m currently a high school student, so studying takes up a lot of my time. I’m also a sprinter and jumper on my high school track team. Spending time with friends and family is important to me as well.

3. If you had to name one thing that gets you totally psyched about climbing, what would that be?

The community. Climbing is a unique sport in the way that everyone is so supportive of one another. Regardless of team or nationality, everyone cheers for each other, during competitions and on real rock.

4. What is your most memorable comp?

Definitely the 2017 Youth World Championships. This was my first IFSC competition, and one that I will never forget.

5. What is the most memorable climb/ boulder problem that you have ever completed or attempted? (inside or out or both)

The second Male Youth A finals climb at the 2017 Bouldering U.S. Youth National Championship. This climb was perfectly my style and I was able to flash it, securing myself a second place finish at the competition, and a spot on the U.S. Team.

6. Do you have any ongoing projects that are just killing you?

I’m psyched on some climbs at the Gunks. Would love to send almost everything on Andrew’s Boulder v10.

7. If you never discovered climbing, what would you be doing now?

I’d likely be more focused on my track events… but honestly I’d be lost. Nothing gives me more joy than climbing.

8. Favorite music to send to!?

Hip-Hop and Dubstep!

9. Climber that you most look up to?

No one climber in particular. However, I enjoy watching and learning from many of the elite climbers, especially those on the World Cup circuit.

10. Top 3 Climbing locations?

The Gunks for outdoor climbing. As far as indoor climbing I’d have to say Kletterzentrum Innsbruck and the Bloc Shop in Montreal.

11. Why do you climb?

I love the feeling of challenging myself. Climbing is a great opportunity to put hard work and determination to the test. It’s incredibly satisfying to achieve or surpass competition goals, or to send a hard project after putting in the work. Also, the community is like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

12. Your favorite BetaLabs product?

Definitely the Buck-It! There are so many hidden features and it closes really nicely.
